Language

The official language of Mauritius is Creole but tourists normally do not encounter communication problems as both English & French are widely understood and spoken on the island.

Currency & Credit Cards

The official currency of Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupees (MUR). Major credit cards can be used at all shops, restaurants, bars and major resorts.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary.

Weather

Summer is between October – April and winter is May – September. The most rainfall occurs between December – April.

Electricity

In Mauritius the power plugs and sockets are type C & G. The standard voltage is 230V and the standard frequency is 50Mz.

What to Wear

Light clothes are advisable because of the tropical climate.  For women, light cotton dresses, slacks and shorts for the day and a long skirt or cool dress for evenings.  Men are most comfortable in light weight slacks and shorts and open neck shirts. Sandals or light canvas shoes are adequate.
